kadhal anukkal-a lovely poem!!!(endhiran music reviews)

Well, the mystery has begun to unravel. First, we were given stingy glimpses of the stills of the highly-anticipatedEndhiran. Right there, our imagination spread its limitless wings, encouraged by the flamboyance of the photographs. And now, it’s time to get a taste of the movie's music. Coming from A.R. Rahman, one is already set to listen to techno beats and snazzy rhythms. When the movie is titled Endhiran (which means Robot), we know there’s no room for the ordinary. Both expectations are thoroughly satisfied.
Produced by Sun Pictures, directed by Shankar, starring Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, the songs of Endhiran are released under the Think Music label.
The album takes off with 'Pudhiya Manidha' in the voices of S.P. Balasubrahmanyam, A.R. Rahman and his daughter Khatija Rahman. In keeping with the futuristic theme of the movie' the opening notes are very techno. A robotic rendering of the first verse is followed by slow strong chanting ‘Pudhiya Manidha Boomiku Va’. The song goes on to sing the praise of the Robot and it’s sublimity. When the pace gradually picks up, SPB’s vocals overpower the others'.
The next song is 'Kadhal Anukkal', a poetic love song in the voices of Vijay Prakash and Shreya Ghoshal. The mellifluous opening guitar strumming is simple yet soul-stirring. This is a typical ARR melody of the 2000s with pacey beats in the background and a gentle melody in the foreground. The first musical interlude with the distinctive note of bagpipes has a soothing feel to it, but when the techno beats surface in the second interlude, we are reminded that we are still in the Endhiran album!
Needless to say, Vijay and Shreya bring soul to the composition – they always do!!!
'Irumbilae Oru Idhayam' is the next number. The lyrics are quite touching and bring out ‘the Robot with emotions’ angle. ARR has sung the song himself, and as always, arouses our emotions with finesse. You can’t miss the female voice singing 'Super Sonic Super Star' from time to time in the background. Once she even calls him 'Robotic Hypnotic Super Star!' The song has a heavy dose of quirky English lyrics and to top it all , we have a medium-pace rap from Kash 'n' Krissy that kind of grows on you.
What follows the heavily westernized number is the theme music, titled 'Chitti Dance Showcase', a very techno, speedy theme. It starts off with few lines of rap in English and quickly converts into quick-paced classical notes sung to heavy western percussion, a very interesting piece repeated a few times in the composition. The song has a heavy dose of electric drums; when the drums fall silent, they are replaced by a serene violin orchestra with a divine harmony.
'Arima Arima' opens with the royal rhythm of drums, like it’s marking the entry of an Emperor, in this case, Endhiran. While the chorus chants his praises, calling him even the Silicon Singam, there is a tinge of pain in the voice of Sadhana Sargam. The thuds of the drums continue all through the number, with Endhiran sounding every bit the tough guy in the voice of Hariharan. This majestic composition has a shade of melancholy, bringing out the contrast in the psychological mindsets of the characters.
While all these songs have an obvious attachment to techno beats and futuristic rhythms, the next song 'Kilimanjaro' is completely removed from these moods. Tribal beats and tribal chanting persist throughout the number without the slightest mention of Endhiran or anything robotic throughout. The lyrics are on the sensual side. The sound of the drums overpowers all other instruments in this number sung by Javed Ali and Chinmayi.
'Boom Boom Robot-da' is the last number in the album. This fully techno, upbeat number (sung by Krithi Sagathia, Swetha Mohan and Tanvi Shah, interspersed with Tamil rap from Yogi B) is a mish-mash of fast techno sounds and a moderately pacey tune. The lyrics reiterate the greatness of the robot and the unimaginable avenues it opens up for the development of humanity.

a bengali-girl-nextdoor to bollywood sensation!!!

Life’s a song for Shreya
At 26, she’s already one of the leading playback singers of the country and her four national awards prove that there’s no fluke in it. In the city for her first public concert, Shreya Ghoshal talks about her journey from a Bengali girl-next-door to Bollywood’s music sensation.
The singer who catapulted into the limelight when she won the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa contest naturally favours reality shows. “These shows are not just talent hunts. They are TV programmes too and hence are packaged with masala and emotional content. While the SMS system may not necessarily recognise the most talented participant, the exposure with millions watching one performing on TV for so long is always there. A lot of contestants are doing concerts, if not singing in films or recording for private albums. Success comes to everyone who makes it to these TV shows,” she says.
Shreya feels that she has a long way to go and a lot more to achieve. “National awards are the most prestigious awards for an Indian artiste and I never expected to get them as I never sang for awards. I want to create ground-breaking music. People should remember me for my work.”
Shreya goes on to inform that she is toying with the idea of coming out with a non-film private album. “Every playback singer should do non-film songs or an album. The problem is that unlike earlier, there are very few non-film music producers these days. I think one has to devise a creative way to promote non-film music.”
She has, in fact, a day dedicated to her in the US state of Ohio and that puts her right next to Swami Vivekananda and Rabindranath Tagore. “It was a surprise to be bestowed with the honour of June 26 being declared as Shreya Ghoshal Day in Ohio,” she says.
The singer made her debut in Tollywood with Nuvvemmaya Chesavo in Okkadu and says she’s loves the city for various reasons. “I’ve done plenty of Telugu songs and loved working with composers like Devi Sri Prasad, Radha Krishna and others. I also hope to meet one of my favourite composers, M.M. Keeravani. I also feel that the Hyderabadi audience make artistes feel loved. Also, I love Hyderabadi biryani!”

BAHARA-AND OTHER IHLS SONGS MUSICAL REVIEW!!!

The songs are about love, togetherness and separation and there is something for everyone.

I Hate Luv Storysgets you from the word go! It’s hard not to tap your feet, dance or sing along when you listen to it. Vishal Dadlani’s vocals are superbly energetic. This one is addictive (I heard it continuously for an hour) and the next big club song. Kumaar’s lyrics are contemporary and identifiable (from a guy’s point of view).
Bahara is a very 90s’ love song helmed by Shreya Ghoshal’s saccharine and melodious vocals and supported by Sona Mahapatra, adding a desi touch to the song. This one is for love-struck girls but it grows on you and sounds like something Pritam would compose. The ‘Chill’ version featuring Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s soothing vocals is equally good.
Next up is the uber-cool Jab Mila Tu, some might call it a hip version of Tum Mile. This one is helmed by Vishal again, proving his versatility. It’s an extremely hummable and breezy track that captures (thanks to lyricist Anvita Dutt of Khuda Jaane fame) the feelings of how some people’s presence, love and friendship jazzes up your life and you fall for them.
Sadka kiya is very pleasant and romantic, about the guy realizing that he is in love. The song has Sufi-rock elements and brings together Suraj Jaggan and Mahalaxmi Iyer, a wonderful combination. Sweet, though it might take a while to grow on you.

Bin Tere has two more versions: Reprise and Remix. The line: Koi khallish hai hawaon mein bin tere, will get stuck in your head. It’s reminiscent of a Shankar-Ehsaan Loy composition such as Aaj Kal Zindagi from Wake Up Sid! AndKaisi Hai Ye Ruth from Dil Chahta Hai. Shafqat Amanat Ali’s smooth and soothing vocals add a magical touch to it and he is complemented by Sunidhi Chauhan. The Reprise version is pulled off expertly by Shekhar Ravjiani and the remix is quite nice too (it is not an insult to the song). You’ll want to listen to them more than once.

Composers: Vishal and Shekhar

Singers: Sunidhi Chauhan, Sona Mahapatra, Shreya Ghoshal, Mahalaxmi Iyer, Shafqat Amanat Ali, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Vishal Dadlani, Shekhar Ravjiani, Suraj Jaggan

A PLAYBACK CONTENDER FOR INDIAN IDOL???

Singing away to glory
It is good news for Hyderabad that their local boy Sreeram has done what no one has done before. This Indian Idol contestant has become the first ever contestant on any reality show to have recorded a song while still being on the show as a contender for the title that he may or may not win.
So impressed are the judges with this Telugu boy’s singing skills that Salim-Suleiman has already recorded a song with Sreeram and Shreya Ghoshal (also a winner of a singing reality show) for the Telugu film being made by Walt Disney. This love song will be picturised on the film's lead pair, Siddharth and Shruti Haasan.
What makes the achievement more important is that the show does not have much viewership in the South and hence the contestants hardly bag any votes.
But music has no language they say and talented singers are proving the adage right. Now that Sreeram has found favour with Salim, Annu Malik is bound to follow…

entry into the musical world

ghoshal ji attracted the great director Sanjay Leela Bhansali....she did a great job by managing to sing five songs in her debut film....for which she was a DOUBLE FILMFARE AWARD WINNER and a NATIONAL AWARD WINNER.

What makes Shreya different from the rest of her ilk is the fact that she has bagged the biggest film of the year --- Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Aishwarya Rai and Jackie Shroff. Shreya playbacks for Aishwarya Rai (who plays Paro).
Eighteen-year-old Shreya considers herself very lucky. It is not everyday that a filmmaker like Sanjay Leela Bhansali calls you up and offers you a film. The singer, like the rest of the cast and crew, is obsessed with her debut film --- she has even set her mobile phone ring to Bairi piya, her song in Devdas.
Shreya, who arrived in Mumbai five years ago after spending her childhood near Kota in the northwest Indian state of Rajasthan, discloses how she bagged the coveted film: "Sa Re Ga Ma, a popular Indian television show at the time, was on the lookout for talented singers. I grabbed the opportunity and mailed my songs in a cassette. Within days, I was called to audition." She sang her way to the children's finals, where she won.
The judges, musical duo Kalyanji-Anandji were so impressed with her that Kalyanji took her under his wing and trained her for a year-and-half.

When Bhansali noticed Shreya on the show, he knew immediately that this was the voice he wanted for Paro. It had innocence.
Shreya continues, "Sanjayji tried to trace me. I remember that phone call. I could not believe that the director of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was on the line, asking for me. The film was such a hit, yet Sanjayji was so polite and humble. I was speechless."
Shreya was auditioned and selected. She remembers her first sitting: March 9, 2000. And the first song she recorded was Bairi piya, "I remember I was asked to rehearse the song once before finally recording it. I simply closed my eyes and sang without a break. When I opened my eyes, I noticed a lot of excitement and chaos outside the recording room. Then Sanjayji told me I had sung the song so well that they had recorded it at one go."
The song has done very well on the Indian charts and has made Shreya very popular in her social circle. "My friends keep teasing me with, Issh [a refrain in the song]! I do not mind it."
Playbacking for Aishwarya is almost a dream come true for Shreya. She states, "I have always admired Aishwarya. I was so excited when I realised I would sing for her. I met her first on the sets ofDevdas. She is so humble. I remember between shots, we would sit together, and Sanjayji would ask me to sing Lataji's (Mangeshkar) songs. Aishwarya has a ear for music, so she would join in too."
She adds, "When I sang, I imagined myself to be Paro. Just like Aishwarya. I tried to bring in the Paro's pain, confidence and innocence."
About the director, Shreya says, "I never imagined I would work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He guided me a lot. I was nervous initially, but the cast and crew were so good to me. Ismailji [Durbar, composer] was also very nice to me."
Shreya GhoshalWhat is most memorable for her is the experience of singing with those she had always admired --- Udit Narayan, Kavita Subramanium, Jaspinder Narula, K K and Pandit Birju Maharaj. "They encouraged me to give my best. I remember once, Uditji told me I that since I had talent and luck, no one could stop me from achieving my goals. This was a great moral boost, coming from such a senior artiste."
She adds, "Kavitaji and I sang Dola re dola together. We had a great time. I kept observing her."
Shreya, who first performed at four, says her mother is an amateur classical singer and her a music aficionado. Her father, an engineer working at Mumbai's Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, took a transfer from Kota to Mumbai only to further his daughter's interests. "When Kalyanji offered to train me, I was still in Kota. He advised my father to take a transfer to Mumbai if I wanted a career in music."
"Devdas has changed my life," she continues. "I now have to balance my life to include college and my career." Among her forthcoming films are Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Munna Bhai MBBS, [director] Shiva's Hindi version of the Telugu hit Badri, Viju Shah's Tujhe Mere Kasam and three films with Ismail Durbar ---Julie, Thoda Tum Bolo Thoda Hum and Desh Devi.
Shreya also has her own plans. "I want to establish myself in the industry. Then I will cut an [independent] album. I want to come out with a new concept, break the monotony in music. Lata Mangeshkar's Meera bhajan was so out of the ordinary, a trendsetter. I too want to explore different styles of music."

music reviews

Soundtracks composed by classical exponents tend to be in most cases a bittersweet experience, more so when such tracks happen for movies of a parallel nature. On the one side while they ensure the highest quality of music, the compositions bear a heavy influence of their regular line of music and hence they invariably get listened to by very few people owing to the esoteric nature. Scored by grammy-nominated sitarist Ustad Shujaat Hussain Khan and Shaarang Dev Pandit, son of Pandit Jasraj, the soundtrack of Mr. Singh Mrs. Mehta is yet another one in that league.
The two ghazals that start off the playlist are both beautifully arranged. First one, Ai Khuda, has been delivered perfectly by Ustaad Shujaat Hussain himself, bread-and-butter stuff for him. And the second one,Barhaan Dil, has two variants. The first one has Shreya Ghoshaldoing the vocals and KK does the honours in the male version. The third song, Fariyaad Hai, is a melancholic folk ballad, fittingly sung byRicha Sharma who has in the past delivered quite a few such songs. The longest track of the album is Behoshi Nasha sung by Udit Narayan and Shreya. And the only track where the composers have tried to bring in a slightly filmy touch to the arrangement, producing a breezy melody characterised by its flute sequences. The final vocal track, Ajnabi Aankhein is also one with a ghazal flavour, sung by Roop Kumar Rathod. And this is the one I liked most, for its haunting tone and the surprise rock-ish twist in the first interlude.
The last four tracks are instrumentals all with heavy classical flavour. First one, called Nailpolish on the toes, has been composed in raag Sindhubhairavi I felt, and is dominated by flute and sitar. The second one, Losers Theme, seems to be in raag Abhogi, and has some splendid flute playing to a soft background of acoustic guitar and keys. Solitaire Blues is a continuation of Losers Theme with the flute playing on at a faster pace.A Shade of Red is for most part an alaap on the sitar, which is followed by unrelated bits and pieces, denoting the situational nature of the track.
The four instrumentals shall make for excellent background material, but having
